If you come to Bangkok and don’t make to the riverside, you’re missing out! The Chao Phraya, also known as the “River of Kings”, is a key part of Bangkok and home to many interesting sights. One of them is the open-air Tha Maharaj lifestyle centre, opened since 2015.
Located right by the river, Tha Maharaj features over 20 restaurants and cafes, as well as shops offering fashionable clothes and assorted accessories. No need to head into the Sukhumvit malls anymore! This area used to be famous for amulet-shoppers, and there are still some stalls around offering different styles for curious buyers. Visitors can also attend dance classes in the resident dance studio. The unique aspect of Tha Maharaj lies in its pleasant design, echoing the style of the shop-houses and buildings found in Bangkok’s Old Town. Stop by and you might see one of the semi-regular special events held there. These have included pop-up markets, food promotions and even live music concerts.
Itching to explore more sights nearby after some time at Tha Maharaj? Conveniently, there are many interesting places to check out nearby. Many museums, The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and both Thammasat University and Silpakorn Fine Arts University are easily reachable. You can even pop over to explore Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn).
Opening hours: Daily from 10 am – 10 pm.
How to get there: Tha Maharaj is located on the Maharaj Road. Parking onsite is availabler, or you can get a cab from your original destination. Another fun way to get there is by boat. Tha Maharaj has its own pier, reachable via Chao Phraya Tourist Boat. Otherwise, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Chang Pier and go on a brief walk to Tha Maharaj.
