Must Try Thai Desserts

Thai food is world-famous for its sensational flavors and dishes that span sweet, salty, sour and spicy. But while som tum, pad krapao & co are deservedly at the top of people’s minds, don’t forget the sweet stuff! Banglamphu is a great spot to get some of these now hard to find dishes. We’ve saved you the trouble of hunting down those stalls and shops. So why wait, here are some must try Thai desserts when you are staying at this ibis Bangkok hotel. Fun fact: Because most of them feature coconut milk, fresh fruits and palm sugar a lot of them are even vegan-friendly!

A checklist for sweet-tooths

  • Kanom Bueng Mae Prapa: Kanom Bueng Boran is a type of Kanom Bueng, thin and crispy mini pancakes made from mung bean flour. This “ancient” version doesn’t use sweet cream as a filling. Instead, you can choose from sweet or savory flavors. The sweet version uses dried persimmon and foy thong (sweetened egg yolk threads). The savory version highlights shredded coconut and prawn. Prices start at THB 12/pc. Location: 110-112 Phra Sumen Rd, walk straight past the HK Noodle and Thanachart Bank branch.
  • Kanom Fak Bua: This rare treat has a name in Thai inspired by nature- “lotus calyx dessert”. This fragrant round dessert has a light pandan flavor to go with its green color as well as an addictively chewy and crunchy texture. Price starts at THB 10/pc. Location: A mobile cart usually found on Sip Sam Hang Road near the Nai Ngam Fish Noodles shop
  • Kanom Pang Pornchai: Not your usual breakfast slice, this shop elevates their freshly baked bread loaves to the star of the show. Each fluffy loaf is hefty with generous fillings, popular choices include raisins, ham or pork floss. Prices start at THB 45. Location: 78-80 Tanao Road, only a short walk away from the hotel.
  • Kanom Fang Piek: This is another Thai treat that has a deceptively unexciting name- “wet millet dessert”. But have a taste and you’ll be impressed by the mellow flavor of millet cooked in coconut milk and flavored with pandan. It’s a delightful pudding-esque treat! Location: Found in Som Song Pochana restaurant, 112 Soi Wat Sangwet, walk down the soi between Pipit Banglamphu & Phra Sumen Fort.

The best thing about Thai desserts is that there are so many of them! So, which ones are your must try desserts? It’s a question many sweets lovers will be glad to debate in detail.
